Yakoruda Municipality

Yakoruda Municipality is situated in the north-eastern part of Blagoevgrad District and encompasses an area of 333.9 sq.кm. Its geographical relief is mountainous and semi-mountainous, including parts of Rila and Western Rhodope mountains and the narrow valley along the upper Mesta River. The average elevation above sea level is 1603 m and the average dip of the terrain is 11,1%.
The municipality includes eight settlements - the town of Yakoruda (the municipal centre) and seven Rhodope villages - Avramovo, Bel Kamen, Buntzevo, Konarsko, Smolevo, Cherna Mesta and Yurukovo. The town of Yakoruda is located 80 km away from the district centre of Blagoevgrad, 30 km away from Razlog and Bansko and 40 km away from Velingrad.

The territory of the municipality includes Yakoruda park range, which is part of Rila national park. The local natural heritage is accessible by means of one of the entries to the park, situated in Nehtenitza area. The Treshtenik-Nehtenitza region has proved to be very attractive to investors interested in the development of tourism related to the clean environment and the quiet of the high mountain, as well as to the protection and exploration of the natural heritage of the region. The proximity to resorts of national significance as Bansko and Velingrad provides an opportunity for the development of an integrated regional tourist product.Within the territory of Yakoruda Municipality there are two mineral springs. The mineral water, examined in 1977, is clean, odourless and pleasant to drink.

At present, Yakoruda Municipality remains a centre of the logging and wood-processing industry, as well as of the production of machines and equipment for that industry. Nature resources have a potential for development of alternative (ecological, rural and cultural) tourism provides grounds for the transformation of the region into an attractive centre of investment. Moreover, there are possibilities for boosting local economic development based on the local agricultural tradition.
Bulgaria's membership in the European Union has created new challenges and opportunities to the local authorities in Yakoruda. The municipality is committed to the implementation of a series of projects for improvement of the technical infrastructure. There are ongoing initiatives for enhancement of vocational qualification as a prerequisite for the opening of better jobs. The efforts of the local authorities are aimed at turning Yakoruda Municipality into an attractive place to live and invest.
