Rila and Rhodope mountains meet along the valley of Mesta River, where the municipal centre of Yakoruda also is. The villages of the municipality are situated on the Rhodope slopes. Avramovo, Smolevo, Bel Kamen, Buntzevo and Konarsko are perched on the high mountain ridges. Beautiful vistas open up from them to Rila, while Cherna Mesta and Yurukovo are huddled in the valley of the river.
Almost half of the municipality's population lives in the villages.
It is worth visiting the 120-year old apiary of bee-master Hasan Shibliov in the village of Konarsko, which is famous for its unique high-mountain honey, produced by 80 bee families. Along the road from the village of Cherna Mesta to Yakoruda, you might also turn off to the nearby mountain-trout breeding pond, in order to try some freshly-caught fish.
